Capt. Randi L. Horstman is casualty in training mission in Korea.

Capt. Randi L. Horstman, 29, lost his life in a training mission in Korea. He was a member of Operational Detach­ment (A Team) 155 of B Company, 2nd Bn., 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

Capt. Horstman was a Detachment Commander (A Team leader) conducting a routine training mission, an infiltration into the Republic of Korea. All in the Detachment were in a parachute drop from an MC-130 aircraft at 10:00 p.m. Korea time October 17. The drop zone was Rigger, approximately 25 miles northwest of Pusan.

Capt. Horstman landed in the Naktong River, one of the largest rivers in South Korea. He was reported missing immediately and a search began immediately. He was recovered three ays later, at approximately 1:00 p.m. Korea time October 20 by a Korean Army Underwater Demolition Team member. The apparent cause of death was drowning.

Memorial services for Capt. Horstman were conducted Wednesday morning in Washington state. Full military funeral services will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 28 at the First Reformed Church in Sanborn with graveside services following at Roseland Cemetery, Sanborn.

Randi Lee Horstman, the son of Chris Christensen of Eagle Bend, Minn., and Marlene Horstman of Hartley, and the adopted son of Irv Horstman of Sanborn, was born November 28, 1959.

He is also survived by his wife, Anita (Dasen) Horstman, one daughter, [redacted], 3, and one son, [redacted], 2. Their address is [redacted]. At this time, Anita, plans to continue residing in the Washington state area.

Other immediate survivors are one brother, Staff Sgt. Jess Horstman, and his wife, C.J., Mc Cord Air Force Base, Olympia, Wash., and one sister, Peggy Ennema and her husband, Terry, of Ivanhoe, Minn.

Randi graduated from Sanborn High School in 1978. He was active in the Honor Society, football and track and was a State of Iowa Scholar. He attended Iowa State University, Ames, 1978-81, where he studied architecture and was active in boxing and was a State Golden Gloves Boxer.

He enlisted in the Army delayed entry program in August, 1981, and completed basic training at Ft. Benning, Ga., as the distinguished graduate in October, 1982. He then attended Airborne Parachute School at Ft. Benning, graduating in May, 1983. He was accepted for Officers Candidate School and graduated at Ft. Benning as distinguished military graduate. He received his officer's commission as 2nd Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Engineer Corps.

In November, 1983, he married Anita Dasen of Sanborn.

He attended Engineer Officers Basic Course in Ft. Belvoir, Va., graduating in January, 1984. He then attended U.S. Army Ranger (Commando) Course, graduating in April, 1984.

He was first assigned to the 79th Engineer Combat Bn. Jan., 1984 to April, 1987, at Karlsruhe, West Germany, where he served as Platoon Leader, Company Executive Officer and Assistant Operations Officer. During that time, in March, 1985, he was promoted to 1st. Lt.

He also received an associate degree in science from the University of the state of New York. He then attended Infantry Officer Advance Course at Ft. Benning, May to Oct., 1987. He attended Columbus College in Columbus, Ga. and received his BA degree in Sociology in June, 1988. Randi attended the Special Forces (Green Beret) qualification course at Ft. Bragg, N.C., and graduated in Feb., 1989. He was then assigned to Operational Detachment (A Team) 155 of B Company, 2nd Bn., 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Ft. Lewis, "Wash., in April, 1989. He attended the Combat Diver (Scuba) Course in Key West, Fla., in June, 1989.

His decorations and awards included the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster, Good Conduct Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Overseas Service Ribbon, Basic Parachute Badge, Combat Diver Badge, Ranger Tab and Special Forces Tab.

Capt. Horstman lived by the Special Forces Motto: "De Oppresso Liber" (To free the oppressed.)
