DANIEL HOFFA

Daniel Hoffa was born December 4th, 1846 in Upper Mahoney township, Northumberland county, in the state of Pennsylvania. He died at his home in Sanborn at 4 o'clock Thursday morning, March 25th; aged 62 years, 3 months and 21 days.

His parents had the sacrament of Christian baptism performed when he was a babe only 10 days old, and he was but 6 years of age when they moved to Ogle county, Illinois. Here he lived and grew to manhood until 1871, when with team and wagon he crossed the bleak prairies to Abilene, Kansas. For five years he farmed there, but at the end of that time went back to his old home in Illinois.

It was not until the year 1890 that he moved to Sanborn, where he has lived on his farm two miles west of town, until he took up his residence in the New Jesusalem above.

In 1871 he married Susan Nicodemus, and to this happy union were born twelve children. Two of this number, both boys, preceded their father to the great beyond, one 8 years old and the other 19 months.

There are left to mourn besides the devoted wife and mother, ten children, six sons and four daughters. Thev are Mrs Rose L Wells, of Sanborn, Iowa; Calvin 0 Hoffa, Lisbon, N. D ; Mrs. Vernie I. Telkamp, Brookings, S. D.;Elm or E. Hoffa, Conrad, Iowa; Charles N. Hoffa, Sioux City, Iowa. Those still at home are Lizzie May, Porter C, Vesta E., Jacob D. and Lloyd L.

Mr. Hoffa was a member of the Modem Brotherhood of America and the Brotherhood of American Yeoman. He was an attendent of Divine worship at the Presbyterian church. For the past year or more he had been ailing and during the winter months he was confined to his home. He bore his sufferings uncomplainingly and with the utmost patience.

In him we have lost a good citizen, a kind neighbor, and a sympathetic friend. But what is our loss is heaven's gain and we would not call him back from eternal bliss, to this vale of tears and a world of sorrow and suffering. We say with I Paul, "For me to live is Christ; but I to die is gain. For I am a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better.

He is not dead. He is away with Christ.

Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon at the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. C. G. Butler, assisted by a quartette. The floral offerings were profuse and beautiful. Great numbers of his friends and lodge associates were in attendance to pay their last respects to the departed.

Interment was made at Roseland cemetery.

The bereaved family have the sympathy of all.
