Mr. J. H. Steffensen of Hartley township was born in Germany Aug. 10, 1837, and died near Hartley Dec. 16, 1899. The deceased came to his death on Saturday evening about 7 p. m. by an accident, in which, while crossing a culvert near town, the wagon was tipped over on the body of the unfortunate man.

The body was first discovered by O. M. Shonkwiler, who finding the man's team running home, having broken loose from the load, made haste to see what had become of the driver. He found him under the wagon dead, and it is believed he died suddenly, tho not much bruised. The body was taken to Hartley and left at Mc-Clianc's undertaking rooms, where an inquest was held on Sunday

The funeral was held in the M. E. church Tuesday at 11 o'clock, Rev. D. A. McBurney officiating, assisted by Rev. J. W Weiuand. The pastor spoke from the words, ''Son of man, behold, I take away from thee the desire of thine eyes with a stroke; yet neither shalt thou mourn nor weep, neither shall thy tears run down." The sermon was an impressive one and was full of encouragement to all who would live the life of the righteous. He was followed by a brief exhortation by Rev. J.@. Weinand. The Odd Fellows took charge of the ceremonies. The prayer -by the chaplain brother, D. C. Putnam, being very impressive. A large number of Odd Fellows and Daughters of Rebekah were present, and their services in honor of the departed brother were very interesting and impressive.

The deceased was a very kind neighbor, a whole-souled, open-hearted man and leaves a wife and young child and other relatives to mourn his departure. His body was laid to rest in the Hartley cemetery.
