Margaret J (Porter) McKeen (1842-1917)

Margaret J. Porter was born June 10th, 1842 in Beaver County, Penn. In the year of 1864. her parents removed to Clinton County, Iowa.

The deceased was married January 10th. 1867 to Samuel Kenneth McKeen. The same year the young couple moved to a farm in Adams County. In the year 1882 they moved to Grundy County and in the year 1896 they came to Hartley and lived on the Westfall farm now owned by Mr. Stribe. Two years later they moved to Hartley and continued to reside here until her death, last Thursday night. Six years ago last August her companion preceded her to the better land.

Six children blessed this union, Wm. H. of Tacoma, Washington; Edward P. of Charlson, N. D.; Albert A. and John T. of Hartley. Two daughters died in infancy.

The following were. present at the funeral: Albert and John the two sons of Hartley, Albert Porter, a brother of Mrs. McKeen; two sisters, Mrs. Hugh Smiley, of LeMars and Mrs. John Cooper of Reinbeck, Iowa and a brother Isaac Sherman Porter of Cedar Falls, also a niece, Mrs. Clark of Luverne, Minn.

Mrs. McKeen was a consistent faithful member of the Presbyterian church; a devout Christain character esteemed highly .by all who knew her. To know her was to love her, cultured, refined, modest and brave, a great but patient sufferer. She bore her pain quiely, a god life has been completed in our midst.

The funeral was largely attended, attesting the high esteem in which she was held. The funeral was held in the Methodist church Sunday at 2 p. m. and the interment was in Pleasant View Cemetery beside her companion. Among the beautiful floral offerings was a splendid one from'the Prcsbyterian Aid Society of which Mrs. McKeen was a splendid worker and member.
