Samuel Keneth McKeen
On Monday, August 15,1910, at 4:05, p m., o'clock, occured the death of Samuel Keneth McKeen, one of Hartley's highly respected citizens. Mr. McKeen had been in failing health for several months and his advanced age is given as the cause of his demise. Mr. McKeen was born in Nova Scotia, June 8, 1833, being 77 years, 2 months and 7 days old at the time of his death.
The funeral services were conducted at the home Wednesday afternoon by Rev. G. R. Gilbert and the remains were interred in Pleasant View Cemetery.
When eleven years old deceased came with his parents from Nova Scotia and settled on a farm in Clinton county, Iowa.
When a young man he was married to Miss Sarah Stumvaugh, but in June, 1861, he was called upon to follow her to her grave. To this first union was born one child, Frederick S. McKeen.
On January 10, 1867, he was married to Margaret J. Porter and in the fall of the same year they moved to Adams county, where h» continued his life as a farmer. In 1882 they moved to Grundy county, and in 1896 they came to Hartley and settled on the Westfall farm, now known as the Stribe property. Two years later they moved into Hartley aud have since resided in the residence where Mr. McKeen died. Six children, four boys and two girls, were born to this union: William FI., of Tacoma, Wash , Edward P., of Charlson, N. D., Albert A., of Hartley, and John T., of Canada. The two girls died in infancy.
Mr. McKeen was a devout Christian gentleman, having united with the Congregational church when 36 years of age, but later joining the Presbyterian church, in which he was a faithful member at the time of his death.
The good wife and four sons, other relatives and a host of friends are left to mourn his departure. The JOURNAL joins with the community in extending sympathy to the bereaved.
