Mrs. Ella Welch Merry, mother of John F. Merry, of Montgomery, passed away at the home of her son at Montgomery Thursday, November 26. She had been ill for the last five weeks, and a stroke terminated her life on earth. She was 88 years, 7 months and 23 days of age.

Ella Welch was born April 3, 1848 at Edgewood in Clayton County, Iowa, the daughter of Michael and Margaret Welch. She was married on December 3, 1868 to Henry J. Merry at Manchester, Iowa. The couple lived at Manchester until March, 1883, when they moved to O'Brien county, Ia. They farmed there till 1896 when they moved to Hartley where they made their home.

Mr. Merry passed away January 30, 1918, she continuing her residence there until her health became such that she gave up housekeeping seven years ago and has since made her home with her youngest son, John, at Montgomery.

She is the morther of five children: Pamelia, who died at the age of 12 years; Frank W. of DeKalb, Ill.; Charles H. of Minneapolis, Minn.; Bernard H. of Rochester, Minn.; and John F. of Montgomery.

Mrs. Merry was a loving mother and a kind neighbor, always ready to help others in their hour of need. Her pleasant disposition spread cheer about her and she was ever welcome in the homes of neighbors and friends. She was a member of the Catholic church and her life was moulded in the teachings of that faith as she understood them. Her passing is mourned in the communities where she was known.

Besides her four children, she is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Mary Ann Adams of Colesburg, Ia., and Mrs. Margaret Lewis of Greely, Ia. Three brothers and a sister preceded her in death. Also mourning her passing are 15 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church in Montgomery, Rev Hart, pastor of the Montgomery and Superior churches officiating at the last rites. Interment was in Pleasant View cemetery at Hartley.
