Car Accident takes Life of Connie Hoermann

Two Others Seriously Injured In Crash at Country Intersection Near Germantown

A two-car accident at the intersection one mile east of Germantown shortly before 11:00 p. m. Monday night took the life of 15-year-old Connie Hoermann, daughter of Mr and Mrs. Wilbert Hoermann of near Germantown. Critically injured were her sister, Phyllis, 17, driver of the Hoermann car. Also seriously injured was Donald Brockmann, 17, who was alone in the other car.

Chest injuries were determined to have caused Connie's death. Phyllis, rushed to the Sioux Valley hospital at Cherokee by Gaudian ambulance, was in critical condition suffering from severe lacerations of ear and neck, a broken right arm and a leg injury, though the exact extent of her injuries could not be determined immediately. By Wednesday morning her condition was much improved and her injuries less serious than they were originally thought to be.
Brockmann, taken to St. Joseph hospital in Sioux City by Baumgarten ambulance, will be in surgery Thursday to set broken bones. Brockmann's jaw was broken in five places, his left hand crushed, his left wrist broken, the right ankle broken and his left ankle badly swollen and its condition undetermined. Donald is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin Brockmann.

The Brockmann car approached the intersection from the north as he was returning home from Paullina. The Hoermann car was coming from the east as they were returning home from Paullina and had stopped to let out friends at the Eugene Schuknecht farm.

The Brockmann car was damaged beyond repair and the Hoermann car badly damaged when the cars slammed together in the middle of the graveled intersection. The Brockmann car went on into the ditch and the Hoermann car spun around throwing its occupants out. One or both of the girls were thought to have gone through the windshield of the car.

Despite the seriousness of his injuries Brockmann made his way to the Edward Hellmann farm home several rods west of the corner, from where doctors and ambulances were called. Eugene Schuknecht, living just to the east of the corner, was first on the scene, accompanied by Milan Lehmann. Others soon arrived from Germantown to give assistance.
