MRS. EDWARD PAULING

A pioneer mother of St. John Lutheran Church was laid to rest in the Congregation's cemetery, when on Tuesday, March 10th, the burial rites were held for Mrs. Edward Pauling. Sr. After a brief service at the home, the mortal remains were escorted to the church, where the assembled worshipers paid their last respects. The service was conducted by the Rev W H. Jurgens, local pastor, who spoke in German and English on the words of the 23rd Psalm: "The Lord is my Shepherd. I shall not want." Singing of beautiful Lutheran chorales by the congregation enhanced the beauty and solemnity of the service.

The deceased. Mrs. Marie Pauling, was born Sept. 12th, 1868, in Hanover. Germany, She was baptized in the name of the Triune God and so received into God's family of redeemed children on Sept. 27th, 1868. On April 1, 1883, the day of her confirmation, she solemnly renewed her pledge to be and remain a child of God.

In the year 1884 the deceased in company of four sisters came to America and lived for several years near Chicago, at Cooper's Grove, III. In 1878 she came to Iowa with one sister, and on May 28th, 1893. she became the bride of Mr. Edward Pauling, the marriage being solemnized by the sainted Pastor Jacob Horn. For almost 49 years this couple maintained a Christian home on their farm 7 miles southeast of Granville, sharing the fortunes of life as they befall God's children, bearing their joys and their sorrows as true Christian spouses.

The Lord blessed their home with three children, who survive to mourn a mother who taught her household the beauty and strength of the One Thing Needful.

The deceased, who had been ailing for a time, became bedfast about four weeks ago. All that medical skill and loving care, especially on the part of her daughter-in-law, Mrs. Emil Pauling, could supply was done. But the Good Shepherd was calling His faithful sheep to the heavenly Fold. She fell asleep peacefully on Saturday morning, about 7 o'clock and was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom.

Mourning her departure are her husband; her three children, Ida, Mrs. John Kruse, Edward Jr., and Emil; also six grandchildren and one great grandchild; and a host of other near and distant relatives and friends.

Her mortal remains were borne to the grave by six nephews, namely Messrs. Wm. F. Pauling, E F. Beermann, Arthur Beermann, Henry Hibbing, Emil Hibbing and Henry Grimberg. Among the relatives attending from a distance were Mr. and Mrs. Fred Grimberg and Mr. Harry Anderson, of Hammond, Ind.; Mr. Emil Klein, of Chicago; and Mrs. Charles Mishkin of Aurora, Ill.
