Carl Dobbertin Sr. Is Called by Death

Reached the age of 91 Years; Funeral Service Held Tuesday

A hardy pioneer of Caledonia township, a faithful member of St. John Lutheran Church, a true Christian father was laid to rest on Tuesday, May 19, 1942 when the last rites were held over the mortal remains of Mr. Carl Dobbertin, Sr. The services were conducted by the Rev. W.H. Jurgens, the pastor of the deceased, first at the home, then at the church, and finally on the cemetery.

The church service included the singing by the large audience of such sturdy soul-stirring chorales as "A Stranger and a Pilgrim I Journey Here Below," by Paul Gerhardt, and "Jerusalem Thou City Fair and High" by John Meyfort and also the simple moving prayer, "Jesus Savior Pilot Me." by Edwaerd Hopper. The Pastor delivered the funeral sermon in English and German on the basis of the words of the Holy Seer St. John, "Hold that fast which thou hast that no many take thy crown," recorded Revalation 3, 11.

The departed Father in Christ was born in Pommern, Germany, on October 30th, 1850, the son of Carl Dobbertin and his wife, Sophia, nee Halin These Christian parents brought their infant son to Jesus in holy baptism and later saw to it that he was given thorough instruction in the chief parts of Christian doctrine. At his confirmation he renewed his vow of allegiance to the Triune God. whom he promised to love and serve all his days.

In the year 1868 the deceased journeyed to America making his home for a time at Coopers Grove, Cook County, Ill. It was here that on April 2, 1972, he became espoused to Miss. In that year he became a voting member of St. John Church and took an active part in the upbuilding and maintenance of the Kingdom of God in this community.

In 1914, the deceased moved to Paullina, where he joined our Zion Church, and lived in retirement at Paullina until the death of his faithful helpmate in 1933, with whom he shared life's weal and woe for 61 years. In the following year the lonely widower moved back to Caledonia township, making his home with the family of his devoted son, Edward, until the Lord called him to the eternal Home above at ten minutes to one last Friday noon, May 15th. The deceased was granted a blessed, peaceful end, spared all pain and anguish -- a noteworthy toke of the heavenly Father's love and care. He attained to an age of 91 yeas, 6 months and 15 days.
