OBITUARY OF FRED PAULING

For the second time within a week the angel of death struck in the St John Lutheran church to remove a pillar and pioneer in the person, of Mr Fred Pauling, Sr., The last rites in his honor as a true member of the Christian Church were held on Saturday. May 23rd, being conducted by his Pastor, the Rev W H. Jurgens. The assembly took part in the burial service at the church by the singing of sturdy, stirring Lutheran Chorales, while the Pastor spoke on "The Death-Day of a True Christian is His Birthday Unto Eternal Life" based on the words recorded in Philippians 1, 23.

The mortal remains were borne to the grave by six nephews of the deceased Messrs. Albert Meyer, Otto Meyer. Otto Strampe, Alfred Pauling. Earl Pauling, and Arthur Beermann. and were laid to rest on the cemetery of St. John Church there to await the final summons unto the resurrection of life.

The deceased was born on February 11th 1858. at Kankakee. The son of Diedrich Pauling and his wife Louisa, nee Westenfeld. These Christian parents brought their infant son to Holy Baptism and laid him in the arms of Jesus. At his Baptism he was given the names John Ludwig Frederick. After attending the Christian Parochial) School at Coopers Grove Ill., whither his parents had moved, and after thoro instruction in the chief parts of Christian doctrine, he was confirmed on April 2. 1871. by the sainted Pastor E. Riedel By the grace of God the deceased Father in Christ remained true to the vow he made his God on that day.

In 1881 he came to Iowa and settled in Caledonia township, where he lived ever since Since January 2. 1893 he has been a voting member of St. John Church

On January 23 1891. he married Mrs. Sophia Warnecke. the ceremony being performed by the sainted Pastor E Zuerrer This union the Lord blessed with four sons, of which two preceded the father in death.

Some years ago, this man of robust constitution and apparently sound health found himself assailed by a dread illness, rheumatism, which gradually sapped his strength. Since August 18, 1937, he was confined to his home and more or less bedfast In these trying days, when he needed tender care and nursing his faithful wife largely supplied that need. With remarkable faithfulness, with amazing strength and perseverance, and with unsparing self-sacrifice she spent her days and nights In the service of her ailing husband.

During these days of affliction he was regularly visited by his Pastor whose only concern was to be the messenger of God to a sorely tired soul. The Word of God and the Lord's Supper ware a constant source of joy and comfort to the deceased , who despite his almost total deafness always maintained that he could understand and enjoy the ministrations of his Pastor. Even shortly before his death, when all around him the night of death was falling he rallied his failing senses to repeat with his Pastor choice passages of Scripture, which were his staff as he Journeyed thru the valley of the shadow of death.

He fell asleep in Jesus peacefully on Wednesday May 20th, at twenty minutes after five, firmly trusting in the merits of His Savior Jesus Christ, as we have every reason to believe. He reached an age of 84 years, 3 months, and 9 days.

His memory is cherished among us by his faithful wife, two sons, Ernest, residing here, and Fred E., of Sterling Colorado, a stepson. William Warnecke of Lake Park, Iowa; an adopted daughter Mrs. Laura Holtcamp, of Des Moines a brother, Edw.. and a sister Mrs. Louise Beermann, resident here; eleven grandchildren and one greatgrandchild, as well as a host of other near and distant relatives and friends.
