Jacob 'Jake' Marvin Moermond, the son of Cornelius and Marie (Overman) Moermond, was born January 9, 1928 in Hollandale, MN. He moved with his family to O'Brien County in 1935 and Salem, Oregon in 1944. He entered the military in 1945 and served with the U.S. Navy until his honorable discharge in 1947. He then farmed with his family near Hartley, IA.

Jake married Ruth Kohn on July 28, 1955 in Sanborn, IA. After their marriage, they resided on a farm near Hartley. They moved to Sutherland in 1963, where they farmed and raised their family until they moved into town in 2005. He was active in the Sutherland community as a member of the American Legion Post, the Masonic Lodge and the Ruritan Club. He was an O'Brien County Supervisor for 20 years and was a board member of the Upper Des Moines Opportunity agency. Jake was also on the Board of Directors for the NW Iowa Mental Health, NW Iowa Drug and Alcohol Treatment in Spencer.

Jake enjoyed singing, listening to music, gardening, crossword puzzles, and visiting with friends at the coffee shop.

Jake passed away at the Community Memorial Health Center in Hartley, Iowa on Saturday, February 6, 2016 at the age of 88. He was preceded in death by his parents; one sister, Alvina Parise and two brothers: Don and Rev. Earl Moermond.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife, Ruth of Sutherland; his children: David (Mary) Moermond of Urbandale, IA, Cyndi Stewart of Altoona, IA, Dan (Val) Moermond of Hartley, IA and Josh (Becca) Moermond of Sutherland; 7 grandchildren, Nicholas (Alyssa) Stewart, Nathan (Lindsey) Stewart, Stephanie and Jacob Moermond, Case, Dain, and Gabe Moermond; 4 great-grandchildren, Clara and Lela Stewart, Sawyer and Sylas Stewart; other relatives; and many friends.

Graveside services will take place 11:00 A.M., Monday, February 16, at Calvary Cemetery in Sutherland.
