Funeral services for Benjamin Holtgrewe, 84, well known Remsen retired farmer who died at Sacred Heart hospital, Le Mars, Wednesday, were held at Christ Lutheran Church Saturday afternoon at 1;30 o'clock. Officiating was the pastor the Rev. Alfred Christiansen. Burial was in the community cemetery at Paullina, Ia.

Mr. Holtgrewe had been in failing health for a long time but was up and about his home until Sunday when he suffered a heart attack, with recurrences later at the hospital where he was admitted the same day. He died at 3:30 o'clock Wednesday afternoon.

Born March 12, 1875 on a farm near Washington, Mo., he was the son of Gerhardt and Marie Elise Holtgrewe. As a young man he came to Iowa with his brothers and went to farming.

He married Anna Ebert at Germantown, May 10, 1907 and after farming several years in the vicinity of Paullina, the couple brought their family to the Remsen community, farming here successfully for many years until their retirement to town in the spring of 1950.

Mr. Holtgrewe was a lifelong member of the Lutheran Faith a loyal member and faithful in church attendance until ill health overtook him. He was the head of a large and closely-knit family, a devoted husband and father and brother, and a friend to all his many acquaintances in this and the Paullina communities. His death brought genuine regret among his many friends as well as it was a shock to the family.

He was the last of a family of six sons and four sisters.

Surviving are the sorrowing widow, Anna; four sons and eleven daughters; Mrs. George (Carrie) Jurgensen, Paullina, Ia.; Roy, Mrs. William (Esther) Ott and Miss Elsie, Remsen; Mrs. Lillian Ott, and Mrs. Walter (Ida) Grimberg, Paullina; Albert, Remsen; Mrs. Harry (Nora) Tesch, Primghar; Mrs. Harm (Leona) Seggerman, Marcus; Mrs. Harry (Bernice) Bottjen, Remsen; Mrs. Carl (Gladys) Bottjen, Hawarden; Mrs. John (Irma) Lower, Sioux City; Burdette, Glendale, Arizona; Benjamin, Jr., Sioux City; and Mrs. Donald (Shirley) Le Moine, Mesa, Ariz.

Two daughters passed away in infancy.
Mr. Holtgrewe was the last of a family of 10 children, preceded in death, besides his parents and the infant daughters, by five brothers and four sisters.

NOTE: This obituary does not mention his first wife, Anna Geringer Holtgrewe, 1883-1907, the mother of four of his children, the youngest of which was born in 1906.
