Hazel Ann Williams

Hazel Ann Andersen Williams died January 12, 2005. Hazel Williams was born in Primghar, Iowa December 17. 1915 With characteristic independence, at 19 years of age she boarded a tram for Los Angeles, California to attend junior college and remained a Californian for the rest of her life.

She married welder and fisherman Chauncey "'Bill" Williams in 1940 After spending their early years in Newport Beach, California they moved to their Thomas Ave. home in Pacific Beach in 1956 where Hazel lived until 2002. Bill worked on the original construction of the Coronado Bay Bridge and after he died in 1972, Hazel taught at Atonement preschool for nearly 20 years.

Hazel thoroughly enjoyed the Pacific Beach community where she introduced swimming and the pleasures of beach life to generations of friends and family She was an active member of the Christ Lutheran Church on Cass St. She did not drive a car and for over 50 years conducted her shopping and loved to take in the fresh air and sunshine of the beach and bay on her 1940s bicycle. Many of her former neighbors will remember gathering for coffee or backyard barbeques where everyone was welcome and something to grill was a good enough reason to have a party.

Hazel is survived by her sister and brother-in-law Doris and Gerald Craun of Spirit Lake, Iowa; sister-in-law Dorothy Andersen of La Jolla, California, her nieces and nephews and many people who loved her. She will be often and dearly remembered with so many happy memories. A memorial service was held at the Christ Lutheran Church chapel, 4761 Cass St . Pacific Beach, CA at 3pm Friday, February 4, 2005.
