Louisa Marino
April 5, 1921—-Nov. 19, 2009
Louisa Margaretha Helene Marino, 88, Cranford, NJ, formerly of Sheldon, died Thursday, Nov. 19, at Overlook Hospital in Summit, NJ.
Funeral arrangements were under the direction of Rossi Funeral Home of Scotch Plains, NJ.
Louisa Marino and her fraternal twin, Louis Deiderich Johann, were born April 5, 1921, to Dietrich Johann and Margaretha Bertha (Wormke) Hollander. One of eight children, she was born and raised on a farm in rural George.
At the age of 16, she attended a cosmetology school in Sioux City for two years. She then worked as a beautician in a local salon in George for two years. At the age 20, she and her older sister, Alma, left for Bellflower, CA, where she was employed by Hardman’s Aircraft, working on an assembly line rewinding airplane motors during World War II.
She met her future husband, Peter Angelo Marino, an Army soldier stationed in California. Peter, a young city boy, born and raised in Jersey City, NJ, fell madly in love with this young Midwestern country girl. They were married on May 11, 1943, at Holy Redeemer Lutheran Church in Bellflower, CA. After being discharged from the Army, he and his wife settled in Sheldon, where they raised three children, Marsha Louise, Joan Paulette and James Peter.
She had her own successful beauty salon for many years in Sheldon.
Family life centered around their active membership at St. Paul Lutheran Church and the close-knit town of about 5,000 residents. The family relocated to Roselle, NJ, in 1957 and became members of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Elizabeth, NJ.
She began a new career selling residential real estate in the early 1960s and she continued for 25 years. About 1968, they purchased a multifamily property in Fort Lauderdale, FL, which provided many years of enjoyment for all the family. It was during this time that they moved to Cranford, NJ, and became members of Calvary Lutheran Church. The marriages of her three children brought Frank, Lorraine and Ronnie into the family with much joy and celebration.
The loss of her husband in 1977, and her son, James, in 1996, were difficult times, but the blessings that brightened her world were her dear grandchildren Todd, Sara, Elizabeth and Peter.
She was a grandmother who gave unconditional love to each and made the most of each day spent with them. She was thrilled to attend the weddings of three grandchildren and welcome their marriage partners, Lynne, John and Jack with open arms.
She was blessed with her first great-grandchildren Erin Kylish, in 2004. Since then, she was fortunate to have four more great-grandchildren, Anna Kylish, Joseph Theophilakos, Jake Todaro and Caitlin Kylish.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Peter Angelo Marino; a son, James Marino; and seven siblings, Peter Hollander, Herman Hollander, Mrs. Chris (Alma) Mulder, Mrs. Andy (Ella) Lewis (formerly Mrs. Bruce White, Mrs. Edward (Emma) Barnes, Louis Hollander, and Mrs. Warren (Lucille) Kruger.
