Fowler and Carpenter families of Muscatine

FOWLER, CARPENTER

Looking for family who descend from William Carpenter (born 1820 Ohio - died 1907 Muscatine Co., IA) and his Wife Malinda Fowler Carpenter (born 1832 - died 1915 Muscatine Co., IA).

I have William's death certificate and it says his parents were William Carpenter and Sarah Ayres/Ayers. I first find William and Malinda in the Hamilton Co. OH marriage records, having been married 11 Jul 1847. Next I find them with her father Isaac Fowler (born 1807 KY - died 1890 Muscatine Co., IA) and brother Isaac L. Fowler (born 1834 OH - died 1910 Muscatine Co., IA) in the 1850 District 4, Scott Co., IA census.

Known children of William and Malinda (I have the will and full probate file):
1. WIlliam Alexandrew - died in infancy
2. Mary Jane - died in infancy
3. Isaac Newton Lafayette Fowler 1850-1875, buried Parr Cemetery, married Samantha Eveline Sissell.
4. Charles 1855-1911, married Elizabeth Emaline "Emma" Compton and died in Custer Co., OK
5. Silas 1856-1934, married Catherine Annette "Nettie" Rowen, died in Vernon Co., MO
6. James Monroe 1858-1945, married Mary Egel.
7. Frances 1861-1948, married 1. Alfred Stigers & 2. Jeremiah Dee
8. Carrie Ida 1862-1951, married 1. Paul Benshoof III & 2. Fred O. Everett, died in Torrington, Goshen Co., WY.
9. Elizabeth G. "Lizzy" 1866-1949, married Charles M. Fridley
10. Alathier "Alice" or "Allie" 1867-1961, married William Sherman Henderson
11. Bertha "Bertie" 1869-1950, married Leander Franklin "Andy" Young
12. Owen 1871-1950, married Nettie Richards

In 1860, William, Malinda and children are back in Springfield, Hamilton Co., OH. Presumably, William's mother died. While there were Ohio William Carpenters serving in the Civil War, no record for him has been found and his grave is not marked as a veteran.

From 1870 until their respective deaths, William and Malinda can be found in all of the censuses in Montpelier, Muscatine Co., IA. They are both buried in Parr Cemetery in Pleasant Prairie, Fulton Twp, Muscatine Co., IA. I have had a direct line male descendant sample his DNA, and we are involved in the Carpenter program on this line.

In 1860, Isaac Fowler is with his second wife Permelia Ann "Emily" Neal Fowler in McLean Co., KY. Isaac served in the Civil War with Co C of G Ky 26th Inf. This is marked where he rests in Parr Cemetery and I also have his service records.

I never find Isaac in censuses ever again - the next record I find is his obituary:

Muscatine Weekly Journal - Tues Nov 25, 1890, p.4 - DIED - At his home in Pleasant Prairie, Sunday, November 23, 1890, ISAAC FOWLER, SR., of cancer of the tongue.

Fact One: Isaac first married a lady named Allathier. I have a copy of their divorce record in Scott Co., IA 3 Jun 1850. It is not believed that she ever made the move to Iowa and I have never found her in a census. Family lore is that she was born 1813 in NY and her maiden name was Childs/Chiles. On Malinda Fowler's death certificate, it says her name was Allatheiar Landon (or something like that - hard to read).

Fact Two: Isaac next married Permelia at the home of Robert Neal in Scott Co., IA on 26 Oct 1851.

Known children of Isaac Lafayette Fowler, Sr. and Allathier
1. Abraham 1829- married Margaret Kelso in 1850
2. Malinda 1832-1915, married William Carpenter 1847 in Hamilton Co., OH
3. Jacob 1832-
4. Isaac Lafayette "Lafe" 1834-1910, married Sarah Chatterton
5. George Washington 1835- , married Roza Hamilton
6. James Dickey 1836-1914, married 1. Jerusha Caroline Hoagland (born and died in Indiana), 2. Martha F. Merrill
7. Elizabeth 1839-

Known children of Isaac Lafayette Fowler, Sr. and Permelia Ann "Emily" Neal
1. William Mathew 1854-1884
2. John Francis Beverly 1856-1920, married Annie Laurie Jenkins
3. Permelia "Jane" 1858, married Louis Schultz
4. Charles G. 1860, married Gertrude Young
5. Mary M. 1862- married Charles O. Block and John Funk
6. Julia "Cordelia" Fowler 1864-1889, married E.E. Simpson

Permelia also had a child before she married Isaac Sr. and his name was William Edgar "Ed Neal". He was born in 1847.

The Fowlers hit a brick wall with Isaac Sr. (1807-1890) - the Carpenters with William (1820-1907). I really need help with this. I have a great uncle who has done the family genealogy for 70 years. His time is short. He did the genealogy the old-fashioned way before computers - every vacation in court houses across the US, graveyards and treks to Salt Lake City. I really want to crack this case while he is living.

Please help!

Thank you, Cindy Weatherby - St. Petersburg, FL
