Fred M. Ziegler Death Follows Lengthy Illness
Fred M. Ziegler, 83, longtime resident of Muscatine, died at 10 a.m. today at St. Mary's hospital, Madison, Wis. He had been making his home at Madison with his son, Elmer Ziegler.

The body is to be returned to Muscatine and funeral services are planned at 3 p.m. Thursday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. The Rev. M.L. Van Wagenen pastor of the First Congregational church will have charge. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Mr. Ziegler was born in Kulnbach, Bavaria, Germany, on Jan. 20, 1870, and came to America at the age of one year.

Active in civic and community affairs, Mr Ziegler served as president of the Muscatine County Chapter of Red Cross for more than 25 years, was named president emeritus and traveled over the United States to Red Cross conventions representing the local chapter. Also, he was president of the YMCA board for more than 25 years, being named president emeritus and an honorable member. He served as secretary of the Muscatine Building and Loan Assn. over 25 years and was a member of the P.M. Musser Library Board for 24 years.
In his church work, he was a deacon and president of the business committee of the First Congregational church for many years and taught a boys Sunday School Class for 51 years.

Mr. Ziegler was a charter member of the Kiwanis club. Active in Masonry, he belonged to the Blue Lodge, the Chapter Counsel Commandery, Consistory and Kaaba Temple. He was on the degree team in the Chater and held one of the Consistory degrees.

His wife died four years ago. Also preceding him in death were two half-brothers, Chris of Kansas City, and Edward of Muscatine.

Survivors include his son, Elmer, at Madison; two grandchildren, Miss Dorothy Ziegler, St Louis, Mo. and Frederick Ziegler, Rock Falls, Ill; and two great-grandchildren, Richard and Ronnie Ziegler, Rock Falls.
