Funeral services for G. William Smith, 72, West Liberty, were held July 16 at the West Liberty United Methodist church. The Rev. Frank Greenwood officiated and burial was in the Oak Ridge cemetery. G. William Smith died July 13 at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City following an extended illness. He was the former owner and publisher of the West Liberty Index.
He was born Feb. 18, 1908, a son of Franklin and Catherine Meyers Smtih. On July 15, 1938, he was married at Eldridge, to the former Myrtle Weise.
He spent his entire life in the printing business in West Liberty and from 1942 until retirement in 1972, he was the editor and publisher of the Index. He was a former member of the West Liberty City Council, past president of the West Liberty Chamber of Commerce, he was a past master and 50-year member of the Mount Calvary Masonic Lodge and a member and past president of the West Liberty Rotary Club. For several years he had served on the West Liberty Fair Board.
Survivors include his wife; two daughters, Mrs. James (Katherine) Melsa, South Bend, Ind., and Mrs. Robert (Margaret) Baugh, Bellevue; two sisters, Mrs. Mable Bennett, Tacoma, Wash., and Frances Smith, Rock Island, Ill.; and eight grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister and two brothers.
