Nichols Man Killed When Trucks Crash

Funeral Services Held for J. R. Borgstadt, Crash Victim.

Nichols – J. R. Borgstadt, aged 35, young business man of Nichols, met a tragic death Saturday night at 8:30 on highway No. 2, two and one-half miles east of Washington, when the light truck he was driving collided with a cookhouse towed by a large truck belonging to the J. B. Hannahs Construction company of Ottumwa.
Mr. Borgstadt was on a business trip to Washington where he disposes of his produce to the Reister Produce company. The trucks met on a curve and the towed wannigan swung over in front of the light truck driven by Mr. Borgstadt. The top and dash of the light truck were mashed inward pinning him in the seat, crushing his head and lower limbs. His face was cut by broken glass from the windshield and it was necessary for those who came to his assistance to pry the dash back with a pole before he could be removed from the car.
Mr. Borgstadt was taken immediately to the hospital in Washington where he died within a few minutes.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 2:30 o’clock at the Christian church in Nichols in charge of the Rev. Mr. Hopkins, assisted by the Rev. C. E. Clark of Sigourney. Rice, C. M. Poole, C. R. Metcalf and William Gabel. Those in charge of the flowers were E. R. Swickard, Mrs. William Gabel, Mrs. DeWayne Rosenfield, Mrs. R. A. Daedlow, Mrs. C. H. Metcalf and Mrs. B. F. Nichols. Burial was in the Nichols cemetery. The John L. Mumm American Legion post of Lone Tree was in charge of the services at the grave.
John Raymond Borgstadt was born June 13, 1896, at Sweet Springs, Mo. When a small child he came with his parents to Nichols, where he had since made his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Marie Ryan Sept. 2, 1918.
