26 October 1961 - The Tipton Conservative

Donald Paul Oberman, 20, Atalissa, was injured fatally in a collision of 2 pickup trucks at a rural intersection 3 miles southwest of West Liberty. The accident took place about 9 p.m. Oct. 20. Oberman died in an Iowa City hospital about 12:20 a.m. Oct. 21.

Also injured in the accident were Harvey D. Shaeffer, 20 and Emmett Ady, 17, both of West Liberty and Arthur J. Stover, 36, West Liberty, driver of the other truck. Shaeffer received an eye injury. The other men were cut and bruised.

Muscatine County Deputy Sheriff Charles Whisler said the two vehicles collided at an intersection of 2 graveled roads, 2 1/2 miles south and a mile west of West Liberty.

He said the Oberman pickup was headed west and Stover was headed north. After the collision, both pickups went into a ditch and Oberman's rolled, throwing him and Shaeffer out. Stover's pickup also rolled, but only onto its side.

The deputy described both vehicles as total losses.
