28 November 1957 - The Tipton Conservative

Jerry McVay, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lowell McVay of West Liberty, was instantly killed Sunday afternoon when he was crushed beneath the car he was driving.

The accident occurred on a Muscatine county road, four miles southeast of Atalissa. The West Liberty high school junior's car apparently hit a rut, causing it to go out of control. It crashed into a tree and overturned, pinning McVay beneath the car.

His two companions, Dean Toburen and Tom Reier, both 16, who were riding in the front seat with McVay, were not hurt. Toburen ran a mile and a half to get help.

The three youths had been out for a Sunday afternoon ride and were on their way back to West Liberty. McVay's death was the result of a broken neck and chest injuries.

He was a member of the West Liberty football squad and was active in other athletics. He was also a member of the Methodist church and an Explorer Scout.

The son of Lowell and Virginia Ladely McVay, he was born Oct. 1, 1940, at Brooklyn. The McVays have lived in West Liberty for five years, moving there from Belle Plaine. He is survived by his parents; a brother, Terry, 8; two sisters, Connie, 11 and Pamela, 5.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at the Methodist church with the Rev. Ray Orr in charge. Burial was in Oakridge cemetery.
