Services for Edward Lyons Howard, 30, of West Liberty, killed shortly before 2 a.m. Tuesday in a two-car collision on Highway No. 6, a half mile east of Walcott, will he held Saturday from the Snyder funeral home in West Liberty. Interment will be in Mt. Calvary cemetery.
Howard's auto apparently ploughed into the rear of an auto driven by Herman Eserhaut, 45, of Tipton, who suffered only a cracked rib.
Howard's car caught fire after the impact which threw the two autos 100 feet. A passing truck driver, Carl Hylin, Wenona, Ill., pulled Howard from the car and another truck driver put out the fire with a hand extinguisher.
Dr. E. J. Ahmann of Walcott pronounced Howard dead before the ambulance took his body to Mercy hospital.
A native of West Liberty, Mr. Howard was born Aug. 22, 1921. He was a graduate of St. Ambrose college and attended the State University of Iowa. He was a veteran of World War II, and belonged to the Knights of Columbus, Iowa City.
His survivors include his mother, Mrs. John Howard, four brothers, Lt. Leo, Port Chicago, Calif., John, Burlington, Ia., Robert and Joseph, both of West Liberty; two sisters, Lt. Mary Howard, Camp Pendleton, Calif., and Mrs. Margaret Jepson, West Liberty. His father died in 1926.
The Halligan funeral home sent the body to West Liberty.
