30 January 1919 - West Branch Times
Mrs. Carl Barnes died at her home in West Liberty Friday, January 24h, a victim of flu-pneumonia. Private funeral services were held at the home Sunday afternoon. Besides her husband Mrs. Barnes leaves a little son, about five years old and a little daughter, 4 months old. Mrs. Barnes is well known in this community. The husband family have the sincere sympathy of all. Mr. Barnes' mother, Mrs. Ella Barnes, and sister, Miss Hazel, have taken the two children into their home to care for them. Mrs. Barnes and Hazel have been caring for little Jessie Beers, another grand-daughter and niece, for more than a year. There seems to be no limit to their desire to do good.

Mrs. Carl Barnes died shortly before midnight, Friday, Jan. 24, 1919, as the result of an attack of influenza with complications. The funeral was held on Sunday afternoon from the West Fourth street home conducted by her pastor, Rev. W. R. Foster of the Christian church. Interment was at Oakridge cemetery.
Lillie Laverne Brightwell was born at Stuart, Iowa, Sept. 8, 1891. On May 25, 1910, she married Carl C. Barnes. To this union two children were born--Wayne LeRoy, now seven years of age, and Marguerite Sylvia, aged four months. These and the husband are left to mourn, and with them the aged mother, Mrs. William Brightwell of West Liberty, three brothers, L. C. Brightwell of West Liberty; Aden B. of Brookings, S. D., and Clifford B. of Hiawatha, Kans.; three half-brothers, Irwin of Eldora; Albert and Edward of Iowa Falls; three sisters, Mrs. Wertz of West Liberty, Mrs. Clyde Wells of Davenport and Mrs. Eric Evans of Rock Island and one half-sister, Mrs. Elmer Ostheimer of Eldora. Her father died about 10 years ago.
Mrs. Barnes had been a member of the Church of Christ since 1902, having gone into the church while a resident of Stuart. Her membership was transferred to the church in West Liberty about six years ago. She was kindly and sympathetic in the sorrows of others and was always ready to comfort those in grief, and the memory of her kindly acts will long be remembered by her friends. -- West Liberty Index.
