Warren Marolf Electrocuted; Rife Burned

Warren Marolf, 16, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Marolf, was electrocuted and Donald Rife, 18, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Rife, Cedar county, seriously injured Monday afternoon at 1:45 P.M. while working on the Kaufmann bridge, which is being rebuilt over Sugar Creek, six miles northwest of here. The two youths were working on the ground with a drag line, loading materials for the repair work, when a crane swung out and hit a high electric line. Marolf was instantly killed when the line came in contact with the crane; Rife suffered burns about the hands and back and severe electric shock. He was taken to Hershey hospital, Muscatine, where his condition is reported to be serious. Coroner A. M. McCormick, Tipton, is making investigation of the tragedy. The bridge was washed out during the high water a year ago, and the county began repair work only a short time ago.

Warren Marolf, born at Wilton Dec. 4, 1928, was a sophomore at the Wilton high school and a member of the Methodist church.

His parents; three brothers, Robert H., George Edward and Lyle Eugene; a sister, Rita Sue, all at home; and his paternal grandfather, Edward Marolf, Wilton, survive. A brother, Gerald, preceded him in death. Funeral services were held Thursday afternoon at the Methodist church, with the Rev. Roger Crabtree conducting. The Griffith funeral home had charge of arrangements.

Improvement is reported in the condition of Don Rife at the hospital in Muscatine.
