Charles Mewes, Former Local Resident, Dies. Charles William Mewes, 82, died at 12:25 p.m. Tuesday at Mercy hospital, Davenport. He was a former resident of 117 Parking drive.

The son of Charles W. and Frediericka Fuhlman Mewes, he was born Sept 12, 1869 in Drury township, Ill., and first moved to Muscatine in 1920. He married Jessie Deakman Oct. 13, 1909 at Muscatine. A famer by occupation, he was a member of the First Methodist Church.

Survivors include one step-daughter, Mrs. Lela Rausch of Viola, Ill.; two brothers, Edward of Illinois City, and Albert of La Harpe, Ill.; four nephews, Edward and Elmer Mewes and Carl and William Kleist, all of Drury township; three nieces, Mabel and Esther Kliest of Drury township and Mrs. Glen Bennett of Coal Chester, Ill.; and six step-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three sisters and two brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home with the Rev. E. Fahnestock in charge. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
