Neil Owen Wicks, 62, of 407 East 8th Street, West Liberty, died suddenly Friday morning, January 6, 1995, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Mr. Wicks was born July 29, 1932, at Iowa City, the son of Marc and Mercedes Salmen Wicks. He was a graduate of Iowa City City High School in the Class of 1950. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the U. S. Army. He attended the University of Iowa. On June 5, 1955, he was married to the former Clare McGregor, at Iowa City. Mr. Wicks was a long time Maid Rite restaurant owner/operator in West Liberty, starting in 1957. At the time of his death, he was also a sales representative for Bankers advertising in Iowa City.

Mr. Wicks was a member of the First Church United in West Liberty, West Liberty Lions Club, Chamber of Commerce, Mansell Phillips American Legion Post #509, and the Sons of the American Legion. He was former Mayor of West Liberty from 1968 to 1972. He was a board member of the Muscatine County Fair. He was an honorary member of the West Liberty Fire Department. Neil was a long-time helper of Santa Claus in West Liberty and a diehard St. Louis Cardinal Fan. He also belonged to the Muscatine Moose Lodge.

Survivors include his wife, Clare Wicks, of West Liberty; two daughters, Karen and her husband Kevin Lenane of Iowa City and Lynn and her husband Scott Silberstein of Liberty, Missouri; a son, Steven and his wife Jean Wicks of Tipton; a brother, Alan Wicks of Iowa City; and six grandchildren, Lindsay, Austin, and Courtney Lenane and Eric, Greg and Jackie Wicks. He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Chris in 1979, and a sister, JoAnn Reeds.
Funeral services were held Monday, January 9, 1995, at the First Church United in West Liberty. Rev. Ralph Farmer officiated and Mrs. Marianne Phelps was the organist. Pallbearers were Joe Weil, Joel Rock, Daryl Sterner, Kenneth Minor, Robert Brooke, and Dale Christensen. Burial with military honors conducted by the Mansell Phillips American Legion Post #509, was held in Oak Ridge Cemetery. The Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, was in charge of arrangements. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine County Fair Grounds Walkway Project.
