Mr. Earl Smith, age 97, died Tuesday, January 9, 1996, at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, following an extended illness.

He was born February 7, 1898, Pike Township, Muscatine County, son of William and Barbara McMichael Smith. On August 22, 1917, he was married at Muscatine, to Della B. Kramer. They had celebrated 75 years of marriage in August of 1992. The couple had farmed all their life southeast of West Liberty, retiring later and moving to West Liberty. He was a member of the Muscatine County Farm Bureau, the IOOF Lodge, and the Moose Lodge.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Ethel Burnett, of West Liberty, five sons, Frank, Robert, Kenneth, Wane and Rodney Smith, all of West Liberty. 28 grandchildren, and several great and several great great grandchildren also survive. He was preceded in death by his wife in 1993, a daughter, Betty Weinard, and a sister, Ethel Deahr.

Funeral services were held Friday, January 12th at 11 a.m. from the Barker Funeral Home, west Liberty, with Rev. Mario Padilla officiating. Beverly Blair was organist. Pallbearers were Joe Smith, Dennis Smith, Michael Smith, Steve Burnett, Richard Smith, Rodney Smith Jr., William E. Smith, and Harold Weinard Jr. Honorary pallbearers were: Robert Barclay, Doug Smith, Rick Weinard, Marion Barnhart, Earl Deahr, Thomas McMichael. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery. A Memorial fund for the Wet Liberty Rescue Unit has been established.
