Death of John Chambers.A dispatch was received this morning from Frank Chambers at St. Paul, announcing the death of his father, John Chambers, yesterday. The dispatch stated that relatives will start this evening for Muscatine with the remains, arriving here tomorrow morning. Services will be held in the Baptist church and interment will be made in the family burying ground I the city cemetery, but the hour of these services cannot now be stated.
The immediate cause of death was cancer of the bladder, for which an operation, as a last resort, was performed in the St. Paul hospital, a few days ago.
John Chambers was the youngest of four brothers – William, Vincent, Anderson and John – who were pioneer residents of this county and who about thirty years ago were prominently identified with the business interests of this city, but who are now all dead. According to the early records, W., Chambers, father of theses brothers, moved with his family to Muscatine county from Indiana in 1830, settling in Sweetland township.
Subsequently they were all residents of this city.
We have no record of the personal history of the deceased. He was about 65 years of age. He had not been a resident of this place for more than thirty years past. He is remembered, however, by our older citizens as a man of uprightness of character and good business habits, who had many warm friends.
The wife of his youth, whom he married in this city, has been dead nearly twenty years. Two children survive, Frank and Clara.
