John L. Mills 1874 - 1955

John L. Mills, 81, died at 4 a.m. Sunday, 18 December, 1955 at the Hershey Convalescent home, as the result of complications. He had been ill for three weeks.

Mr. Mills home was on a farm Rural Route No. 1, Nichols. The son of Van Buren and Eunice Foster Mills, he was born Oct. 2, 1874, at Muscatine and was a life-long resident of this community.

He married Mary Ellen Spratford Feb. 8, 1905, at St. Mary’s church in Nichols. His occupation was that of a farmer of 80 acres along the Cedar River east of Nichols, Iowa.

Surviving are three sons, Arley Mills, Muscatine, Milburn Mills, West Liberty, and Elzie Mills, Nichols; two daughters, Mrs. Arvilla [Ray] Van Zandt, Muscatine, and Mrs. Felicitas [Harry L.] Braun, Nichols; a brother, William Mills, Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. Cora Conklin, Des Moines; 16 grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, five sisters, Gyletta Bell Butcher, Hattie Pike, Minnie White, Elizabeth Adams and Alice Adams plus two brothers, Amos J. and George J. Mills.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 20th at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home with the Rev. Everett I. Hageman, pastor of the Zion Lutheran church, officiating. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery beside his wife who died in March this year.
