MUSCATINE - Sherman Junior "John" Gerels, 69, of Muscatine, died Sunday, Jan. 30, 2000, at Unity Hospital. Services will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Rev. Wade Duroe of Hillcrest Baptist Church will officate.

Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

He was born on Oct. 21, 1930, in Muscatine, the son of Sherman and Georgiana Kerr Gerels. He married Louise Giese on Aug. 21, 1948, in Muscatine at his parent's home. He was a member of the Amalgamated Meat Cutters and Butcher Workman of North America, AFL-CIO. He retired from Oscar Mayer seven years ago where he worked for 24 years.

Survivors include his wife, Louise Gerels of Muscatine; two daughters, Bonnie Gerels Tharp and her husband, Garey and Theresa Gerels Hanson and her husband, Tom, all of Muscatine; two grandsons, James Jay Rieff and Daniel Lee Tharp his wife, Angela; a great-granddaughter, Abigail; a brother, Joe Gerels of Muscatine; three sisters, Betty Zorn and her husband, Ralph, of Muscatine, Ruby Telsrow and her husband, Darold, of Durant, and Leona Gerels of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, John Thomas Tharp; two sisters in infancy; and two adult sisters.
