JOY, Ill. - Helen M. Cushman, 82, of Joy, died Monday, March 13, 2000, at Rosewood Care Center in Moline, Ill.

Services will be at Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo, Ill. The Rev. Brent K. Phillips will officiate. Burial will be at the Aledo Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the Volunteer Fire Department First Responders.

She was born on Oct. 27, 1917, in Henry County, Ill., the daughter of Fred and Jennie Stewart Newman. She married John A. Cushman on Feb. 16, 1937, in Rockford, Ill. She and her husband farmed north of Alpha until 1977. She enjoyed crocheting, reading and spending time with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband; a daughter, Barbara Etheridge and her husband, Earl, of Joy; five grandchildren and spouses, Michael and Lorine Etheridge of Aledo, John and Debra Etheridge of Joy, LaVerne Etheridge of Belleville, Victoria and Ray Fiedler of Fort Dodge, and Daryl Etheridge of Keithsburg, Ill.; 10 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Dorothy Carlson of Orion, Ill., Marjorie Wongstrom of Geneseo, Ill. and Roberta Little of Geneseo; four brothers, Howard Newman of Annawan, Ill., Eldon Newman of Woodhull, Ill., Dwayne Newman of Lynn Center, Ill., and Raymond Newman of Osco, Ill. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister June Hoffmier.
