Earl Eugene "Butler" Eggert, 85, of Tipton, died March 3, 1999, at Mercy Hospital due to complications of congestive heart failure.

Services will be at United Methodist Church in Tipton. The Rev. DeLane Wright will officiate. Burial will be at Tipton Masonic Cemetery.

Visitation will be at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton, with Mason services at the funeral home.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1914, in Bennett. The son of William and Madge McQuillen Eggert. He married Marjorie Toodie McLain on May 28, 1995, in Tipton.

He graduated from Bennett High School in 1933. He was employed as a truck driver and farmed in the Bennett area for many years. In 1963, he owned Bennett Feed Service, retiring in 1981. Although he lived in Tipton since 1955, Earl was proud to be a native of Bennett and always considered it his home. He was an avid conversationalist, renowned for his uncanny ability to recount past events in explicit detail. Bennett has lost one of its finest historians.

He served in the 34th Division of the U.S. Army during World War II in Africa and Italy, and was awarded the Bronze Star. He was a 51-year member of Cedar Lodge No. 11 AF & AM, the Bennett American Legion, V.F.W. and the Tipton United Methodist Church. He was a republican.

Survivors include his children, Merry Sue Ibsen, and her husband, James "Monty," of Iowa City, Brett Eggert of Tipton; a sister, Lois Berodt of Silver Springs, Md.; a brother, William Springville; three grandchildren, Carrie Rowald of Coralville, Katie and Max Ibsen of Iowa City; two step-grandchildren, Blake and Ben Friis of West Branch; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Jany Dewulf. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; his daughter-in-law, Sue Eggert; and two brothers, Wilbur and Francis.
