MUSCATINE, Iowa - Dennis L. Monroe, 59, of Muscatine, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the VA Hospital in Knoxville.

Services: Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Following the interment a time of food and fellowship will be held at the American Legion Post No. 27.
The Rev. Melvin Grimes will officiate services. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery with full military rites by the combined units of the V.F.W Post No. 1565 and the American Legion Post No. 27.

Casketbearers are John Monroe III, John Peniston, Alan Carlisle, Robert Peniston, Dennis Hawkins and Randy Wagler.

Honorary casketbearers are Howard Peniston, Ernie Peniston and David Atwater.

Dennis Lee Monroe was born on March 25, 1949, in Davenport, the son of John F. and Thelma (Mallory) Monroe. He served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam, serving in the 53rd Signal Battalion, 2nd Field Force 25th Infantry as a radio transmitter operator.

He retired from Yellow Freight Systems in Davenport after 30 years of service.

He was a member of the American Legion Post 27. He enjoyed fishing, antique cars, driving his Harley Davidson and playing cards.

He will be deeply missed by fiancé, Betty Atwater, of Rock, Island, Ill.; two daughters, Stephanie Miller and Andrea Monroe, both of Muscatine; two grandchildren, Jorre and Briggs; two brothers, Gregory S. Monroe and Jeffrey A. Monroe and his wife, Lynda, all of Muscatine; one sister, Eileen Monroe-Wilmington of Springfield, Virginia; nieces and nephews, John Monroe, III, Mark Monroe, Randy Hammerich, Alecia Wilmington, Cassandra Monroe and Nathan Monroe; and many aunts and uncles.

He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, John Monroe Jr.
