MUSCATINE - Vernon R. Franklin, 85, of 1002 Robin Road, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Unity Hospital. Services will be at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Revs. Michael Spangler and Pamela Saturnia of the First Presbyterian Church will officiate. Honorary bearers will be Marvin Franklin, Terry Franklin, Judge Robert Stohr, John Schenkel, Leroy Schenkel and Bob Richmond. Pallbearers will be Jay Franklin, Jim Honeyman, Claire York, Rick Plett, Bill Baird and Ron Paulson. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery. A Military service will be provided by the combined squads of the American Legion and the V.F.W. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the funeral home. A Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church. Mr. Franklin was born on Jan. 19, 1914, in Muscatine, the son of Edward and Millie Wilhelmie Franklin. He married Marie D. Plett on June 12, 1949, in Muscatine. He was a U.S. Army veteran having served in the European and Pacific Theater. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church, the American Legion, Moose Lodge, Past Master of the Iowa Lodge No. 2 AF&AM, Davenport Conservatory, and the Kaaba Temple Shrine. He managed Trout's and Benner Grocery Stores. He is survived by his wife, Marie Franklin of Muscatine; a daughter, Dianna Preston, of Pierce City, Missouri; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and one sister.
