MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Delbert D. Abney, 75, Muscatine, died Sunday, Sept. 29, 2002, at his home after a short illness.

Graveside services are Wednesday at Soldiers Lot in Greenwood Cemetery with military rites by the American Legion and the VFW. Pallbearers are Chad Lee, Scott Payne, Jeremy Hill, Birch Wilkens, Ashly Wilkens and Eric Hutmacher.

Visitation is Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.

Mr. Abney was born on Dec. 7, 1926 in Rockport, Ind., the son of Dige and Francis Carter Abney. He married Myrle Keeler Shaner on Dec. 7, 1963, in Davenport.

He lived in this area since 1962 and was employed by Morgan Trucking for 20 years, retiring in 1989. He was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army.

He was a member of the International Foresters and enjoyed driving stock cars for 20 years for M.V.S.C.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Doug Abney and his wife, Peggy, of Letts and Darren Abney and his friend, Ellen, of Muscatine; two step sons. Richard L. Shaner and Jeffery Shaner both of Muscatine; two step daughters, Teresa Tompkins and her husband, Fred, of Florida and Carolyn Wilkens of Muscatine; three brothers, Charles Abney of Romeoville, Ill., Joe Abney of San Antonio, Texas, and Ray Abney of Holland, MI; two sisters, Betty Abney of Tell City, Ind. and Eleanor Cortez of Davenport; eleven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one grandson, Eric Payne.
