Eugene ‘Gene’ O’Brien
MUSCATINE, Iowa - Eugene "Gene" H. O’Brien, 76, of Muscatine died Friday, December 12, 2008 at Genesis West Medical Center in Davenport surrounded by his family.

Funeral services will be at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services. Rev. Gertie Nickols will officiate the services. Burial will be in the Illinois City Cemetery with full military rites by the combined units of the V.F.W Post 1565 and the American Legion Post #27. Casketbearers will be Ethan Everhart, Nick O’Brien, Jason Garrett, Brendan Wagner, Jacob Schroeder and Jon Schroeder. Honorary casketbearers will be Don Blaesing, Gage Kent, Jack Cromer and Steve Reist. Following the committal services at the cemetery, a time of food and fellowship will be held at the Moose Lodge.

Visitation will be December 15, 2008, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Home for Funeral and Cremation Services.

‘Gene’ was born on July 5, 1932 in Muscatine, the son of Randall and Esther Hintermiester O’Brien. On December 22, 1951, Gene was united in marriage to Twyla Dusenberry in Aledo, Illinois.

Gene served with the United States Army from November of 1952 – October of 1954.

He was a supervisor at G.P.C. for 37 years.

He was a former member of the Moose Lodge and V.F.W. Gene was a past president of the Muscatine Little League Association and coached for several years. He enjoyed Blue Grass music and festivals, wine making, hunting, fishing, an avid Cardinal and Hawkeye fan, but most of all, Gene dearly loved to spend time with his family, especially the grandchildren.

He will be deeply missed by his wife, Twyla O’Brien of Muscatine; his children, David O’Brien of Muscatine, Daryl O’Brien of Muscatine, Patti Dean and her husband, Richard, of Omaha, Nebraska, Doug O’Brien and his wife, Laura, of Muscatine, Reynea O’Brien and special friend, Jeff Renfro, of Muscatine and Shelly Haynes and her husband, Tom, of Muscatine; eight grandchildren; three great grandchildren and one sister, Odetta Lewis and her husband, Charles, of Fruitland.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, one son, Gary Ray O’Brien, six brothers, Clyde Zaehringer, Ralph Zaehringer, Virgil Zaehringer, Dick Zaehringer, Lyle Zaehringer and Don Zaehringer and three sisters, Florence Hoehnadle, Grace DeVore and Edith Conklin.
