MAN'S DEATH IS CAUSED BY DRINK

CHARLES BENNETT DIES AT COUTY HOME AFTER "SPREE"

Believed to Have Taken Wood Alcohal, Says Couty Physician - Leaves Family in City

Excessive drinking cost Charles Bennett, 59, farm laborer, his life. He died at the county farm at 2 o'clock this morning.

It is probable that he had partaken of wood alcohol in the opinion of Dr. W.S. Norton, county physician. He had been drinking heavily, according to the physician. Bennett informed him prior to his death that he never had difficulty in procuring liquor in the city. "Chronic alcoholism" is the official cause of death as pronounced by County Physician Norton.

Bennett was taken to the county home Monday night. He had been seriously ill and had gone to the home of his divorced wife, 513 East Fourth Street, in the morning. She immediately secured a physician and in the afternoon Bennett asked to be removed to the county home.

The deceased was born June 13, 1859 in North Dakota. He came to Muscatine when a small boy and had made his home here since.

On Aug. 20,1900 he was united in marriage with Emma Lichenhouse who recently secured a divorce. He leaves three children, Mrs. Rosa Hopkins and Frank and Vera Bennett of Muscatine. He is also survived by his father, Charles Bennett, a step-mother, two brothers John and William, and two sisters, Mrs. Rosie Cornelius and Mrs. William Corbin, all of Marshalltwon, Iowa.

The remains were taken to the Meyers funeral home. Funeral arrangements have not been made pending the arrival of relatives from Marshalltown.
