West Liberty, Iowa – Genevieve Iola Chown, 85, West Liberty, formerly of Nichols, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, after an extended illness.
Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree.
Burial will be at Nichols Public Cemetery. Pallbearers are Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at the Nichols United Methodist Church, Nichols.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 6:30 p.m. Rebekah’s service and 7 p.m. Eastern Star service, at the funeral home. A memorial has been established.
Mrs. Chown was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Joy, Ill., the daughter of David Glenn and Maggie Belle Bixby Brown. She married Louis “Peanut” Wilbur Chown Feb. 11, 1939, at the Methodist parsonage, Muscatine. He preceded her in death in 1990.
Schooled at Clancy Lake rural school, she graduated from eighth grade May 17, 1930, in Aledo, Ill.
She came to Iowa to work.
She and her husband lived four miles south of Nichols. She was a homemaker.
She was a member of Nichols United Methodist Church since 1940; charter member of the women’s group now called the United Methodist Women; Rebekah’s Lodge since 1938, now the Iowa City Lodge No. 416; Order of Eastern Star since Oct. 24, 1947, now the Emma Beckman No. 445 of Columbus City.
Survivors include two sons, David and his wife Barbara of Nichols and Lt. Col. Doug Chown and wife Marcia of Enid, Okla.; two daughters, Wiladine Burns of Bettendorf and Audrey McGinn and Husband Paul of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Burns, Lane Burns, Joseph Burns, Kara Hawker and Kamille Hawker; a sister, Vernabelle “Peggy” Mathais of Fruitland; and six nephews, Pete, Jim, Max Dana, Kevan and William.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Leland Brown; a sister Phyllis Jerrel; and a son-in-law, Joseph Burns.
