MUSCATINE, Iowa - Thelma Mulvihill, 97, of Muscatine, passed away Friday, Feb. 8, 2008, at the Muscatine Care Center.

The officiant will be the Rev. Donnita Hostetler. Musical selections will be provided by organist Deb Mohr and vocalist Henry Bentley.

Casketbearers will be Mitch Marshall, Rory Marshall, Tony Saladino and Tony Dickens.

Interment will be at the Melpine Cemetery in Muscatine.

Memorials may be made to Amenity Hospice in Cedar Rapids.

She was born Dec. 20, 1910, in Muscatine, the daughter of James S. and Mae E. (Hetzler) McMurphy.

She attended Muscatine schools and graduated from Brown’s Business College.

She married Ray C. Garvin on June 24, 1933. Their marriage was blessed with three children and many foster children. Together they farmed in the Sweetland area until he died on Dec. 1, 1966.

She later married James L. Mulvihill on Dec. 10, 1968. He died on April 1, 2002.

She was a lifelong resident of the Muscatine area, spending the first years of her married life as a homemaker.

She also worked for Dr. John Potter and later as a department manager for J.C. Penney in
Muscatine, retiring in 1967.

She was a member of Sweetland United Methodist Church and enjoyed traveling, knitting and playing bingo. Above all, she loved her family and the time she spent with them.

During her life, she knitted and donated hundreds of stocking caps for newborns at Unity Hospital.

She is survived and lovingly remembered by her daughter, Sandra Marshall and husband, John, of rural Wilton; a daughter-in-law, Beverly Garvin of Muscatine; a stepdaughter, Laura Lee Bird and husband, Dale, of Montpelier; a stepson, Larry Mulvihill and wife, Carol, of Golden, Colo.; a stepson-in-law, John Hagmeier of West Liberty; 17 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; six stepgrandchildren; 14 stepgreat-grandchildren; and three stepgreat-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husbands; two sons, Darell and Dean Garvin; a stepdaughter, Mary Lou Hagmeier; two sisters in infancy; and a half brother, Alba Gaines.
