Iowan found dead in jail

Muscatine, Iowa (AP) - A man identified by police as Herbert R. Steffan, 59, of Davenport, was found hanged from a bar over the door of a cell at the police station here Friday night.

Police said they had arrested Steffan for an investigation. The body was suspended by a leather belt, police reported.

Sheriff Fred Nesper said Steffan had been reported missing since September. Prior to that time he had managed a sunset theater in Davenport, Nesper said.
