Muscatine -- An 11-year-old girl and a 43-year-old man were drowned Friday in a gravel pit near here.

They were Eva Nesbitt, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Nesbitt, and C.C. Hart.

The girl's body was found floating on the water by the Muscatine emergency unit and Hart's body was recovered after workers dragged the pit for a short time.

Charlene Nesbitt, 7, sister of the drowned girl, ran about 5 miles to Muscatine to tell her parents of the tragedy.

According to police, Hart had taken Eva, Charlene and Phyllis James, a neighbor girl, swimming. They were told Eva called for help and Hart drowned while trying to save her.

Dr. T. M. Miller, acting coroner, was uncertain as to an inquest.
