Esther Hawkins, daughter of Swan and Ann Gabrielson Hawkins, was born July 17, 1883 in Stanton and passed away at the Murphy Memorial Hospital on January 17, 1962 at the age of 78 years and 6 months. She was confirmed in the Mamrelund Lutheran Church and was graduated from the Stanton High School. In 1915 she was married to Walter Allquist, who survives. All her life was spent in Stanton except for ten years when she and her husband lived in North Dakota. Mrs. Allquist was a charter member of the Women’s Missionary Society and served as its first secretary. Denied children of her own, she was intensely interested and involved in the lives of her nieces and nephews. Her happiness in their joys, her sympathy in their sorrows, her interest and enthusiasm for their activities never lagged. She was known as Aunt Esther to a multitude of boys and girls and many grown-ups who would be quick to say their lives are richer for having known her. She never lacked appreciation of earth’s beauty or failed to express it. She often phoned those with whom she wanted to share a colorful sunrise or an unusually beautiful sunset. In the summertime she seldom went to town that she didn’t carry flowers for someone else to enjoy. She always gave the best she had. Although failing health curtailed her ability to help others the spirit to do her part was always there. Survivors besides her husband are two sisters, Mrs. E. M. Coppage and Mrs. George Anderson, five nieces, and 14 grand nieces and nephews, and a host of friends. May peace rest over her soul.
