Good-bye to a Good Joe

This past week, a dear friend passed away unexpectedly. Joe Salato died at the age of 47 from complications brought on by pneumonia.

I remember the first time I ever worked up the courage to talk to Joe. At that time, he owned Fox Lounge next to the Tribune office an I was a little bit afraid of him. He was walking across the street to talk to someone else and I yelled, “Hey, do you want to buy some advertisement in the paper?”

He turned around with a big grin and said, “ I've got women yellin at me from all directions!”

I was never afraid of him after that. Through the years, I got to know Joe very well and I came to know a man who was very considerate, very community-minded, and who loved his family very much.

Joe was a member of the Eddyville Volunteer Fire Department and he was a tremendous help during the Flood of ‘93. His knowledge of big equipment was vital during that disastrous time, and you could see him volunteering his services around the clock.

I can also recall seeing him scooping snow around the town on many occasions. Joe was a man with a heart of gold and a lot of big dreams and plans. He'll be missed by many who came to know him as a friend.
