OBITUARY
PASSING OF WILLIAM MULLEN

Mr. William Mullen, one of Chariton's pioneer citizens, and probably the oldest man in Lucas county, passed away at his home near the "Q" depot on Friday morning, July 30, 1926, at the ripe old age of 95 years, 4 months and 16 days.

Death was due to the infirmities of old age. He had been in failing health for some time and had been confined to his home for eight months, but his mind was keen and alert almost to the last, and his memory was unusually good.

Largely attended funeral services, conducted by Rev. Father Charles O'Connor, were held at the Sacred Heart Catholic church on Monday morning at nine o'clock, after which the remains were laid to rest in the Calvary cemetery.

William Mullen was born in Limerick, Ireland, on March 14, 1831. He came to America when he was about twenty-one years of age, and his first work was on the famous Hoosick tunnel. About 1868 he was married in North Adams, Massachusetts, to Miss Nora Gainey, of Ireland, he having earned and sent her the funds to come to this country to be his bride.

Four children were born to this union, two of whom, John and James of this city, are living. Two others, Miss Nora Mullen and Mrs. Mollie Woodman passed away several years ago. Mr. Mullen and family came to Iowa a few years after his marriage and for some time resided at Russell, going there in 1872, where he was engaged as a section foreman for the C. B. & Q. railway. His wife died at that place forty-three years ago.

Two years afterward he was married in Melrose, Iowa to Margaret McKillip. Six children were born to this union, only two of whom, Mrs. Margaret Downard and James Mullen, of this place, survive. Anna, David and Cassie passed away in early childhood, and Mrs. Alice Buffington died a few years ago. Mrs. Mullen died in November, 1910.

Mr. Mullen had been a resident of Iowa for fifty-eight years, and for forty years had lived in Chariton. He was a kind and devoted husband and father, and during his long residence here had won many friends who will learn of his demise with deep regret.

He is survived by four children, John, William and James Mullen and Mrs. Margaret Downard, of this city, and one step-son, C. E. Turner, of Russell. Also by twelve grandchildren and eight great grandchildren, and to them the sympathy of the entire community will be extended.
