PASSING OF A PIONEER

Ruthy Jane Craig was born in Waveland, Indiana, September 24, 1839, and at her decease had attained the age of 78 years and 1 month. Her father was Dr. Thomas Craig of the state of Pennsylvania, and her mother Mary E. Welsh of Kentucky.

The family moved to Albia in the summer of 1855. Ruthy Jane Craig was married the following December 31st to Wm. Shaw, formerly of Pennsylvania. With the exception of a few years at different periods the family have made Albia their home.

Seven children were born to this union: five of whom were reared to manhood and womanhood. She was a consistent member of the Christian church for practically the greater part of her life, insisting always upon her children's attendance at Sunday school and church. She was a woman of high moral standards, and made a noble effort always to live up to them.

Be-widowed later in life she went to make her home with her daughter, Mrs. Dudley Mitchell in St. Paul, Minnesota, until her later marriage to J.Y. Harris of Centerville. For four years she resided in Centerville; but upon the death of Mr. Harris, again took up her residence with her daughter in St. Paul, where, after a lingering illness of many months she passed away peacefully, ready and willing to go to the loved ones beyond and leaving a message to those who stayed to be good and meet her “in glory".

She is survived by two sisters out of a family of fourteen, namely: Mrs. T.B. Perry of Albia and Mrs. Silas Parker of Centerville. Four of her children survive, who are as follows: Will E. Shaw of San Antonio, Texas, who was unable to attend the funeral; Mrs. Dudley Mitchell of St. Paul, Minn.; Mrs. Maurice Kroeger of Guthrie, Okla.; and Mrs. May Meeker of St. Paul, Minn.
