THE FRIDAY UNION
March 21, 1902

Samuel Thomas Craig

It was a strong and beautiful tribute paid to the memory of Samuel Craig by his former pastor Rev. W. J. Hastie of Chariton at the Christian church Wednesday afternoon in the presence of a large audience of mourning friends. It was a just comparison to say that the life of a good man like Mr. Craig lives in the hearts of his friends just as Washington or Lincoln is loved and respected by all the world not as a military hero or eminent statesman, but as an honest, earnest, steadfast citizen.

Mr. Craig was born in Indiana in 1835, came to Albia in early manhood, enlisted in First Iowa Cavalry in June 1861 as a private. Was in many brilliant engagements and for gallant service was at the end of 18 months made sergeant. A year later he was promoted to Second Lieutenant, a little later to First Lieutenant, and later served on staff of --

At the close of the war he returned to Albia and embarked in the grocery business. In 1869 he was elected county auditor and held the position eight years, which is evidence of faithful service. He again entered business and up to 1899 held his place in commercial circles. He retired because of ill health.

He was a faithful member of the Christian church and lived a devoted and useful life. At the close he asked his wife: “Do you think I am ready to make the change” to which she replied: “Samuel, if you are not ready to enter into that rest, then we do not have the right book.”

He leaves a wife, two daughters, Miss Helen and Miss Laura and one son, Thomas Craig, bookkeeper in the First National bank. Mr. Craig was not a member of Orman Post, No. 378, G.A.R., but a large number of the old boys who wore the blue with him acted as military escort. Burial at Oak View.
