Gone Home
GRANDMA CRAIG

After about six weeks illness at the ripe old age of ninety one years three months and twenty two days, passed away at 10:05 o'clock on the night of February 13th, 1903 at the home of her son in-law Mr. T. B. Perry, where she had made her home since the death of her husband, more than twenty years ago, and was tenderly cared for through all these years.

Grandma for this is what she was called by all who knew her, came to Iowa with her husband and family in June 1855, at that time her family numbered fifteen all living, having left one behind (a daughter) who died at the age of 10 years. All the rest except another daughter who died in Albia in 1860, lived to see the war break out, when four of her sons enlisted in defence of their country and from the effects thereof have all passed over and one after another kept dropping off till but three sisters remain viz: - Mrs. Wm. Shaw, Mrs. T.B. Perry and Mrs. Silas Parker of Centerville, all of whom were present at the funeral on Sunday, February 15th. The services were conducted by the Rev. Whitten of Fairfield, Iowa.

Grandma Craig has a large circle of friends and acquaintances all of whom she felt near and dear to and always ready and willing as far as she was able to lend a helping hand. It seemed that her whole alm was to try to do good to or for some one.

There were present at the funeral all her grandchildren that could get here though a number of them were too far away and could not attend.

Grandma Craig was voted in as mother of the 17th Regiment of Iowa Volunteers at their last reunion in Albia. She was a loyal woman to her God, her country and all her earthly friends, the old soldiers in particular.

So farewell Grandma you have gone to rest,
You have left this wicked world of pain,
But God does all things for the best,
And we will try to meet again,
You lived your four score years and ten,
Your time of course had come,
And you were called to meet with them,
That have long since been taken home.

NOTE: Born: October 11, 1811, Shepherdsville, KY; Died: February 13, 1903, Albia, IA; Married: Dr. Thomas Craig (1803 - 1882); Burial: Oakview Cemetery, Albia, IA
