Obituary From “Ottumwa Courier,” Tuesday, December 22, 1931:

William Joseph Springer, 75 years old, died at his home, 1526 Mabel street, at 4:10 a.m. today. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Clara Springer, twelve children, Mrs. Bessie Brown of Ottumwa, William Charles Springer, Lester A. Springer, Mrs. Clara Baker, Mrs. Mary Swanson, Henry Springer, Mrs. Thelma Pilcher and Mrs. Kate Puth, all of Ottumwa; Mrs. Merle Breese of Albia, Mrs. Berle Leist of Garland, Kansas, Mrs. Mabel Kersten of Cedar Rapids, and Mrs. Ethel Huss, also of Cedar Rapids; two sisters, Mrs. Caroline Peterson, living in Kansas, Mrs. Martha Baldridge of Lovilia; twenty-six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Mr. Springer was a charter member of the United Mine Workers of America at Mystic. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o’clock from Johnson’s funeral chapel, conducted by Ensign H.M. Uptegrove of the Ottumwa Salvation Army post. Burial will be made in the Melrose cemetery at Melrose.
