A FATAL FIGHT

Harrison Gholson Deals Deadly Blow to Edward Burnside Saturday Night

The citizens of Albia were horribly shocked Sunday morning when the report was circulated that Harrison Gholson had killed Edward Burnside, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. W. H. Burnside of this city and few were ready to credit the report which on investigation proved to be true.

Sunday afternoon Dr. Hyatt made up a jury of the following well-known citizens: W. H. Burdan, Chas. T. Porter and E. C. Sloan and after hearing the evidence they returned a verdict that Edward Burnside came to his death by being struck on the head with an instrument in the hands of Harrison Gholson.

The Union man was present at the inquest and heard most of the evidence which makes up the story of the crime.

Pat Tucker, Edward Burnside, Tony Aiken, Bert Jones, Tokie Aiken and Jack Cain engaged Harrison Gholson to take them to Hocking in his automobile. The first six mentioned got what they went after - booze. While at the joint they drank several bottles of the suds and then started to Albia with sixteen bottles of the amber fluid in their possession. Instead of coming to town they stopped at the carnival and the boys got out and visited several of the shows. At the 49 show Burnside became so boisterous that he was ejected from the tent by Deputy Sheriff Smith. Tucker and Burnside returned to the automobile and one of the witnesses testified that Harrison Gholson and Tucker were disputing over paying for the automobile trip and they came to blows, Gholson striking Tucker with his fist, cutting a gash in the latter's forehead. Gholson started for the tent and the boys started up after him remarking: “We'll get you.” Both boys had beer bottles which, according to witnesses they were going to use on Gholson. The latter turned on his adversaries and struck Burnside on the head with an automobile crank. The latter dropped to the ground and Harrison stooped down to pick him up when he noticed Tucker advancing toward him and he warned him to keep his distance.

Some time after one o'clock Sunday morning Ed Burnside asked Charles Ashba to take him to the Albia hospital where every effort was made to save his life but without avail. The skull was fractured on the left side just above the ear and death took place about 9:10 Sunday morning.

Harrison Gholson was placed under arrest and A. C. Pabst went on his bond for appearance before the grand jury which will be in session this week.

Hon. N.E. Kendall has been employed by Mr. Gholson and Charles E. Miller is looking after the prosecution of the state's case.
