Thursday, November 23, 1939FATHER AND SON KILLED IN COAL MINE ACCIDENT
Lewis McGee, age 49, and son Oren McGee, age 28, were killed 3:30 Thursday afternoon at the McGee coal mine on the Harrison farm in Marion county, about 2 miles northeast of Hamilton.
Their death was caused by a fall of slate which caught father and son, crushing their bodies and causing almost instant death.
Roger McGee was working in the room with his father and brother when the accident occurred and he escaped injury. Although the falling slate hit the lamp on his cap as it fell. He rushed out of the mine and summned help who assisted in retreiving the bodies from beneath __tons of slate which fell.
Lewis McGee lived on the C.A. McGee farm, north of Lovilia and Oren McGee lived west of town, where the family had rooms at the Henry Phipps home. __families moved here early this year from Newton and were former residents of Marion county.
Lewis McGee and sons Oren and Rodger had operated the coal mine where the accident occured since last June.
Lewis McGee was born at Hamilton, Iowa on December 8, 1889, and died on November 16, 1939, aged 49 years, 11 months and 8 days.
He was the son of C.A. and Lucy Ball McGee and with the exception of a few years spent in Newton, he had lived in the Hamilton and Lovilia communites. He was a farmer and coal miner.
On October 10, 1910 , he was united in marriage to Cora Harrison of Hamilton and to this union seven children were born. Surviving are his wife, two daughters, Mrs. Irene Stillwell, of Hamilton and Mrs. Maxine Allen of Bussey; four sons, Dale, Rodger,Raymond and Earl; his father C.A. McGee of Hamilton; one half-brother, Loren McGee and one half-sister, Mrs. Walter Pugh of Lovilia; three grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends
