DANBURY, Iowa -- Thomas K. “Skip” Sexton, 82, of Danbury passed away Tuesday, Oct. 9, 2012, at Maple Heights Nursing Home in Maple ton, Iowa.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 602 Peach Street, in Danbury, with the Rev. Dan Greving officiating. Burial will be in Danbury Catholic Cemetery, with military rites provided by the American Legion Carlson-Frum Post 336 of Danbury. Visitation will be after 4 p.m. today, with a vigil wake service at 7:30 p.m., at the church. Visitation will resume 9 a.m. until service time Saturday at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Armstrong Funeral Home in Danbury and Mapleton.

Thomas Kendall “Skip” Sexton was born on June 9, 1930, on the family farm south of Danbury, the son of Ray and Celestine “Celly” (Fitzpatrick) Sexton.

He grew up on the farm and attended school at Danbury Catholic until junior high and then transferred to the Danbury Public School, where he graduated with the class of 1947. While in high school, Skip excelled in sports, a passion he maintained his entire life. He was on the Little Maroons basketball team that played at the State Tournament in Des Moines. Skip earned a full scholarship to the University of Iowa which he attended for one year and then returned home to the farm. Skip served his country in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, stationed in Japan.

Upon his honorable discharge, Skip returned home to his life’s career in farming and raising livestock. On Sept. 7, 1953, he was united in marriage to Fern M. “Cub” Treiber at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Danbury, where the couple were lifelong members.

Skip was extremely active in the community. He worked with his father, from his youth, digging graves at Danbury Cemetery leading him to have an accurate knowledge of burials there. He was a member of the American Legion Carlson-Frum Post 336 of Danbury. Skip was a member of the independent town basketball team in Danbury and the Danbury Shamrock softball team. For 26 years, Skip refereed high school basketball including refereeing at the Iowa State Basketball Tournaments in Des Moines. As a result of his dedication he was elected to the Boys and Girls High School Basketball Hall of Fame.

Skip served on the board of First State Bank in Mapleton and the Maple Valley School Board, where he also was a past president. He loved to golf and was an active member of the Willow Vale Golf Course in Mapleton, where he worked several seasons maintaining the course. Skip and Cub spent a portion of several winters in California, where he continued to golf with his friends. Skip faithfully followed his granddaughter through her Little League and high school sporting activities.

Survivors include Cub, his wife of 59 years; his son, Mick Sexton of Danbury; his granddaughter, Brandi Sexton and her special friend, Travis Dusenberry of Carroll, Iowa; two brothers, Bob Sexton of Tucson, Ariz., and Kieran “Tiny” Sexton of Sioux City; one sister, Delores “Pudgy” Black of South Sioux City; many nieces and nephews; and friends everywhere.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter-in-law, Deb Sexton; and two sisters, Veda Mae Workman and Maxine Arney.
